My work often takes me to unexpected places--Staten Island, the Diamond District, specialty pen and stationary stores (my personal favorite), and a few weeks ago, Teuscher Chocolates. Teuscher is a bright and aromatic little store tucked just outside the maze of Rockefeller Center along Fifth Avenue. Colorful and full of chocolate, I instantly recognized it as my kind of place. Rows upon rows of hefty chocolate bars (the kind of bars that are not kidding around--exactly the kind I appreciate), and boxes of artisanal chocolates line the walls. Straight ahead lies the main attraction, a case of the most dainty and delectable chocolates you've ever seen.
I sampled several chocolates from this illustrious trove, but the standout piece was by far the dark chocolate champagne truffle. Coincidentally this was also the very truffle I had been sent to purchase. My boss has excellent taste. Imagine if you will a paper-thin shell of full-bodied, earthy dark chocolate lightly dusted with cocoa powder, and inside a packed bell of incredibly rich, finely ground chocolate mousse. As if that's not enough, imagine that the chocolatey heaven you are enjoying gradually gives way to the tangy tartness of a glass of bubbly. Yes chocophiles, in the course of an entirely ordinary day, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a masterpiece.
To top it all off, the staff couldn't have been nicer, eager to chat with anyone who came in and give sound advice about chocolates according to taste, occasion and/or recipient. This warmed my southern heart to no end, I who often find myself trying to make conversation with my Q101 bus driver. Rest assured, there was no north meets south awkwardness here. I encourage you, when you find yourself wandering in like a bee to honey on your next stroll to the skating rink, to stay awhile and chat. Everyone I spoke with was delightful.
Teuscher chocolates are truly works of art, and like all works of art, they don't come cheap. I didn't investigate the bar prices, but truffles will cost $2-$3 a piece depending on the size. Spendy for sure, but I can promise you it's worth the splurge. Like most truly fine things, Teuscher chocolates are not gimmicky; though the chocolates are creative, Teuscher's main aim seems to be making mostly familiar items extremely, extremely well. This is great news, as it means you are likely to find something you fancy whether you're a fanatic like myself or just dipping your toes into the world of fine chocolate edibles. Valentine's Day, anyone? Perhaps Valentine's Day gift to oneself? Yes please.
Namaste chocophiles, and as always, thanks for reading. Strawberry kisses :* :* :*
