The end of trick-or-treating is truly one of the tragedies of growing up. At least in my world! But just because you can't waltz around your neighborhood and then return chez soi with a pillowcase full of candy doesn't mean you shouldn't treat yourself. And indeed, one of the major perks of growing up is that you don't have to resort to the drugstore candy aisle. You can graduate to finer fare!
"Bark" usually refers to a thin, chocolate-based sumpin' sumpin' that is made in large sheets and broken into pieces. It's similar to toffee, but with chocolate. Whilst perusing the bulk cookie bin at Whole Foods (and yes...my favorite place for bulk cookie bins--and scones--is a health food store), I came across Jo's pumpkin bark. What was this dreamy notion of pale orange and semisweet swirls promising flavors akin to pumpkin pie? Sayonara, cookies! Hello, seasonal specialty.
If you could consider a chocolate truly savory, this would be it. Jo doesn't lie; his pumpkin bark really does taste like pumpkin! I imagine that the base is dark chocolate in the 50% cacao range, and that the pumpkin topping is white chocolate mixed with actual pureed pumpkin and spices. Hints of nutmeg and cinnamon abound. It is creamy and earthy and slightly spicy. It is a Halloween parade/Thanksgiving piece o' pie in your mouth. "Song of the South" comes to mind. They're singing about sweet potato pie, of course, but this literally floated into my head like an anthem for fall treats everywhere as I took my first bite. Thank you, Alabama.
If you're health conscious/trying to reel in your figure before the holiday feasts begin/not that interested in sugar (I'm sorry), but still curious, you're in luck! Whole Foods sells Jo's bark in moderately portioned 2" squares. The bulk bin rate works out to about $1 per square. Not bad for a little bit of magic that will satisfy your pumpkin and chocolate cravings ensemble. Happy Halloween, y'all!
