Who knew when I fled 30th avenue and its overabundance of Italian bakeries, that I would find myself in a new apartment just a block away from this little site of treat magic? Martha's Country Bakery is quickly becoming one of my favorite places for sweets in Astoria and NYC at large. Besides offering numerous types of cookies and cakes, they also carry various types of bread pudding, specialty chocolate and espresso drinks, and gelato. The highlight for me, however, is the Mississippi Mud cheesecake.
The MM cheesecake starts off simply enough with a perfectly smooth, creamy and slightly tangy chocolate cheesecake base. On top they plop a complex and thus far unidentifiable mountain of heavenly chocolate something. It has a concentrated flavor and is smooth like fudge, yet slightly crumbly and cakey like a brownie. So what is it?? I really couldn't tell you; all I know is that whatever it is has been doused in a hardened chocolate fudge shell and there are bits of walnuts scattered throughout. The first time I bought this cake, it took me about four days to finish a slice--it's that rich. One could easily be satisfied with just the cheesecake or just the topping, so you can imagine that the two of them together pack quite the punch. I've never dealt Mississippi mud, but if this cheesecake is to be any indication, I can only guess that it is a thick, dense force to be reckoned with. Bon appetit!
