I should start off by saying that I have never been a huge fan of diners. Unless I am going there for a midnight snack or an omelet, I'm generally disappointed by their kind of fare. It seems that whereas I favor freshness and originality, diners favor efficiency, (i.e. frozen food), and consistency. So I wasn't expecting much when I found myself at the Tick Tock Diner earlier this week. I thought, "Well, I am here. I may as well have cake."
I could see the cake case from where I was sitting, and I'll admit I was a bit skeptical. A treat is a treat for me; when I have one, I hope it is really delicious because I probably won't have another one for a while (not counting my daily dark chocolate, of course!). I chose the Fudgy Wudgy cake mostly because the name amused me. It is fun to say. Fudgy Wudgy. It sounds like it could be the name of some long-lost stuffed animal, or perhaps a very interesting nickname. It is also, I am happy to report, quite wonderful to eat.
The Fudgy Wudgy cake lives up to its name with decadent layers of thick, fudgy icing mounds on the outside, and a more syrupy, concentrated icing between the layers of cake. The cake itself is magnificent--perfectly moist, and the taste more akin to a bunch of finely ground Oreo cookies than a typical chocolate cake. It takes the concept of "rich" to a whole other level! I had only a few small bites before I requested a to-go box. That, fellow chocophiles, may be a record. If you ever find yourself in the midtown area, a place generally viewed as being devoid ofculinary prowess of the rest of the city, I highly recommend you sample a slice.
