I'm taking a bit of a detour this week, chocophiles, in order to bring you the Carmelita Bar. This bar is not all chocolate, but it is made with chocolate chips. It is also made with pecans, oats, dollops of cookie crumbs and some sort of heavenly caramely sauce. It is divine, chocophiles. Divine.
Like many bars do, the Carmelita Bar starts with a buttery rich, delightfully crumbly and flaky shortbread-like base. This shortbread base, however, is made with oats in addition to flour and butter, which adds a nice bit of texture, and presumably a bit more nutrition. Then come the toppings: chocolate chips, bits of said butter rich goodness, (those are the aforementioned cookie crumbs), and pecans, (the raw, untoasted, unsalted kind), all held in place with the perfect amount of caramel. This, chocophiles, is my go-to snack, my go-to dessert, my weekly indulgence whilst shopping for otherwise healthy things to eat.
If you happen to find yourself in a Whole Foods, and let's be real: they are everywhere, do not deny yourself this little square plot of heaven. It is the perfectly balanced, sweet and savory, and arguably not-too-terribly-bad-for-you treat. The Carmelia Bar is $2.29 per generous square, or priced per pound if you get it out of the bulk bin, like at the Union Square location. Mark my words, either way it is worth every penny. Be like Ophelia and get thyself to Whole Foods. Be like Nike and just do it. Be like me, and treat yourself to a Carmelia Bar this Sunday. I dare you.
