It's no secret that I am a HUGE fan of Vosges chocolate. A fellow Southern belle and chocophile, Vosges' founder Katrina is an endless inspiration to me. In addition to developing fabulous chocolate treats, Katrina is currently developing a chocolate lifestyle house in Chicago. Where do I sign up for that?!?!
The Vosges super dark line isn't about super dark chocolate. This bar is 72% cacao, which is right at the average in my book. It does, however, emphasize combining dark chocolate with super foods. I'm sure you're already well aware, chocophiles, that dark chocolate is in and of itself a super food. It is packed with wonderful antioxidants, fiber, protein and countless minerals that do all kinds of good things for your body. Throw in some super foods like these bars do, and you have quite the nutritious and soul-nourishing treat on your hands.
I had the pleasure of trying this Coconut Ash + Banana bar while I was home in North Carolina. Whilst pursuing my favorite hometown spot (you got it--The Fresh Market!), my Mom suggested we choose a bar for the family to try together and discuss. It took us a long time to choose this bar--so many options!--but I'm really glad we did.
Wow. What a bar. This is definitely an earthy yet mellow dark chocolate. By mellow I mean that even though it's earthy with a dirt, super muddy dark coffee flavor, it's not bitter. The banana and chocolate ash don't stand out as individual flavors, but they do really shape the flavor of the chocolate. The banana really balances out the earthiness, and the coconut ash adds a hint of smoke. The flavor is fudge-like and cakey. It reminds me of a really dense brownie with chocolate frosting on top. Yum!
According to Vosges, a super food is defined by how it impacts general wellness, brain function and detoxification. In researching just what "Sri Lankan coconut charcoal coconut ash" is, I was surprised/slightly horrified to find out that this is the same stuff they give you in the emergency room when you need to throw up. Definitely detoxifying! What is coconut charcoal exactly? It's an extremely dense substance (if you flattened out one cubic inch, it would cover a football field!), made from coconut shells. However, I also learned that it's used in less, um, violent ways in homeopathic medicine to treat a number of ailments, including many stomach issues. Vosges bars are a little pricey, usually $7-$9 per bar depending on where you buy. Thanks for reading! Strawberry kisses :*:*:*
